In the former Soviet Union professors had job security, just as all workers did. The Soviet Constitution called for full employment and the government was the sole employer. Discharging any worker was very difficult under this system. Even though the professors in effect had guaranteed employment they did not have academic tenure because they could lose their positions if they attempted to publish or teach what was ideologically unacceptable. In 1924 over a hundred philosophers were removed from their positions and exiled.
Part II of the volume consists of documents and articles by others. In Part I, did not repeat much of what is contained in the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, but I have included it in Part II for easy reference. I did not develop at length or reply at length to any particular attack on academic freedom and tenure, and so I have included some representative articles in Part II. I did not attempt to settle the debate between postmodernists and those whom they attack, although I refer to the debate and try to assess its importance for academic tenure and academic freedom.
