Broadly speaking, the concept resembles others that have at times been elaborated by literary critics or anthropologists to define the distinctive nature of the objects they address – the ‘third realm’ of the poem or the ‘liminal space’ of ritual²⁷ – but it is distinguished by its emphasis on the satisfactions of fantasy, on the continuity between later experiences and the infant’s earliest psychological life, and therefore by the hints it offers for understanding the satisfactions and power of art.
