DIFFERENCE IN COSMOPOLITAN SPACE: NEGOTIATING PUBLIC SPACE IN THE STREET The fi rst example draws on the testimonies of four refugees from Algeria: Ali, Farid, Mohamed, and Salim. These men had “to be out” because of “political problems,” which made their return home unthinkable: their lives had been in danger and they had fled their country to claim asylum in Europe. Two of them had already been granted indefi nite leave to remain, and the other two had only recently arrived and applied for asylum.

As “open and provisional” syntheses “of social relations, individual and collective practices and symbolic meanings” (Vaiou and Kalandides 2009, forthcoming), the city’s everyday spaces of diversity are themselves fragmented, complexly stratified, accommodating overlapping worlds and transcended by conflicting negotiations of public and private. So the “vernacular” cosmopolitanisms of “nonelite” places (Werbner 2006, 497) involve power relations and inequality structures that also shape the mundane level of lived experience and everyday practice.
