Some of these opportunities may occur directly within the peer group—for example, if deviant peers provoke fights among group members. Other opportunities occur through peers’ behavior outside the group. For example, deviant peers might offer a youth an opportunity to purchase or sell illicit drugs. Beyond imitation of this behavior, the youth might adopt it merely because it is available (Thornberry, Krohn, Lizotte, Smith, & Tobin, 2003). Deviant peers might bring a youth to new neighborhoods and expose him or her to new stimuli for acting deviantly.

From a rule-governed perspective, the central point in regard to contagion from deviant peers is that being reinforced for talking deviantly is equivalent to behaving deviantly. Therefore, group interactions that provide attention or reinforcement to individuals for their deviant talk are equivalent to group interactions that would reinforce deviant acts. More important, getting group attention for deviant talk would be associated with positive reinforcement, and would therefore lead to similar behaviors in other group contexts involving same-age peers.
