The word playfully uses and parodies the epic language of divine invocation for help in battle. Finally, for me the most remarkable and precious accent of a woman’s voice that we may be hearing in the poetry of Sappho is the voice of a mother celebrating her relationship with her little daughter: ‘I have a beautiful child who looks like golden flowers, my darling Cleis, for whom I would not [take] all Lydia or lovely…’ (fr. 132). The fragment is preserved in a technical comment on a metrical nicety.

These she bore by autoconception (Theogony 132). Thereafter she bears many through intercourse with Heaven, who is her son. Greek and Oriental stories of the gods often involve incest—it is part of the definition of their non-human status. This union is the archetypal hieros gamos, the holy marriage of Heaven (Ouranos) and Earth (Gaia) celebrated in myth and ritual as a fertility rite for the cosmos. And so it goes on. A cycle of power and its overthrow is set in motion when Heaven tries to shut up his and Earth’s children in a cave.

There were female authors in the ancient world, although much of their work is lost and otherwise obscured, like that of the Latin poet Sulpicia, whose elegiac poetry is transmitted under the name of a cognate male poet. It may come as a surprise to some readers that the ancient woman’s voice which we hear most clearly is from the archaic period of Greek literature, not from a more recent time. This may be, in part, because women (at least upper-class women) had more opportunities for poetic production in aristocratic archaic Lesbos than in democratic Classical Athens, from which most of our Greek sources stem.
