The speech sound composition of words affects which markers are added to the word. If the word ends in a +voice sound, the sound added is also +voice (/z/). This can affect children’s language development as a whole. A Portuguese-speaking educator, working with Azorean families, trained mothers to use their Portuguese at home in ways that provided a rich language environment for the children. These mothers had largely focused on the fact that Portuguese was not important in the American context, and had neglected the language at home. The educator encouraged the mothers to talk a lot to the children in their native language.
