The 1840 census reported 599,000 immigrants during the preceding decade. For the remainder of the nineteenth century and extending into the first two decades of the twentieth century, the available free land and the rapidly expanding industrial economy attracted more than 34 million immigrants to the United States. During this period, a peak of 8,795,000 immigrants came between 1900 and 1910 (Table 2).
As a result of the diverse countries of origin, the immigrants possess wide cultural and economic backgrounds. Asian immigrants coming from such countries as the Philippines, South Korea, China, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Japan have a richly diverse ethnic and cultural background. The native tongues include Tagalog (Filipinos), Korean, Khmer, Vietnamese, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Faisi, Arabic, Yiddish, and Japanese, as well as scores of dialects. Next to language, religious diversity characterizes the Asian immigrants.
